  • Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore, is one of the most densely populated regions in the world with 4.99 million residents inhabiting an area of 710.3 square kilometers as of 2009. The annual population growth rate for 2009 was 3.1%, including resident foreigners.

    Singapore was founded in 1819 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the Lieutenant Governor of Bencoolen, Sumatra (a former British colony), in order to establish a new British trading port in Southeast Asia. The first population census taken in Singapore in January 1824 revealed a total population of 10,683. Singapore is now a cosmopolitan city island with a population of about 5 million people.
